Denis and jockey Jonathan Burke were very pleased and encouraged with the way in which Saumur coped with adverse conditions to finish beaten only twelve lengths by the Paul Nicholls hotpot favourite, French import Miranda. One TV commentator described Wincanton as tempestuous yesterday, and drenching showers led to the going being described as 'horrible' and very soft by returning jockeys for early races. It had become the ground she really did not want, and also Saumur was a little wary of the early obstacles, but she then got into some better jumping and found her rhythm as the race progressed. Closing into fifth as the runners met the long straight, the principals kicked clear from the last but Saumur galloped through the line to a clear fourth and show that her stamina was there, and that better ground would suit her well in future races. Jonathan was pleased with her and is developing a good relationship with the Sparkling Partners' mare.
