A triumph for the Sparkling Partners, with Saumur taking the second division of the Racing TV Mares' Maiden Hurdle on a beautiful April afternoon at Huntingdon. With the quickening ground jockey Jonny Burke found conditions much more to Saumur's liking than the atrocious testing ground the last day at Wincanton. He had always felt that she would appreciate good ground, and he took advantage of cutting all the corners around the fast flat track. Racing in third and fourth, Saumur closed right up to join leaders at the first of the two flights in the home straight, and then, edging left before the final hurdle, the mare took the last well and was ridden out to ease away and score by one and a half lengths - with the first three home well clear of the rest. Once again Saumur was convincing in staying on readily over two miles, and really showed the benefit of her schooling under Jonny with a full round of very accomplished hurdling too. The trainer's first two hurdlers this season have both shown great aptitude, and after Dessie's Diamond going close at Lingfield in February, today's victory for Saumur was very much on the cards. Many congratulations to all of the proud owners, having taken the wise option of going hurdling with their sparkling servant Saumur : Margaret and Robert Bolam, Tim Gregory, David Malpas, Graham and Diane Oakley, Sean and Liz Ross. There will surely be a sparkling celebration !
