Roundup of this week's racing
Ruskin Red took his first step into handicap company at Kempton in a class 5 twelve furlong race, and it was surprising that he struggled when ridden inside the last quarter mile, hanging a little left for Charlie Bishop and finishing well beaten about 17 lengths. Bartimaeus went to Chelmsford and stuck to ten furlongs, but he appeared to lose concentration early on and was obliged to race at the rear and wide around the circuit, so that he remained ten lengths off the leaders throughout and was one paced up the straight to finish. Sonnetina remains in good form and also headed to the Essex track for her mile race. A little slowly away, she raced in sixth place going well and then moved up with a good turn of speed off the final bend. She made good headway to dispute the lead at the furlong pole, and with a strong challenge in the last hundred yards she was just held off by a neck at the finish line. Lisdarragh went to Newbury for a mile novice race, on much better ground than his Windsor debut and up in trip by a quarter of a mile. Charlie Bishop reported that he didn't settle and so he pulled throughout the first two furlongs and also he did not relish the extra distance this time - so he will now be switched back from a mile to six furlongs next time, hoping for better ground and a chance to show off the best of his very pleasing homework.
